A Notable Mom from Union County

Mildred Barry Hughes (February 11, 1902 – January 11, 1995) was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and served four terms in the New Jersey General Assembly beginning in 1957, including a stint as Assistant Majority Leader in 1960–61. In 1965, she made history as the first woman ever elected to the New Jersey State Senate. During her legislative career, Hughes sponsored the state’s first “Good Samaritan” law to protect bystanders rendering aid, led revisions to the Food and Drug Act, enacted billboard control regulations, secured funding for nursing-education programs and mental-health organizations, and authored the uniform drinking-age law setting 21 as the minimum. She passed away in Cranford at the age of 92.
